The Mt. Rose Ski Area Snotel site could be used as a reasonable proxy for the winter water accumulation within the Thomas Creek and Whites Creek Basins. However, there are factors that may cause these basins to have lower water accumulations than at the ski area. The ski area Snotel site is situated so that it benefits from lake effect precipitation blowing through the Mt Rose Summit pass, but within the basins at similar elevations as the Snotel site, the rain-snow water accumulation could be diminished by shadowing from the crests of Mt. Rose, Church Peak, and Snowflower Mtn. just to the west. Note that the Snotel data are always at least one day behind, i.e., a snowfall today won't be recorded until the morning of the day after tomorrow.
